Research Focus

I’m interested in the interaction between pathogens and their hosts at the molecular and protein level. New technologies make it possible to study and characterize the response of the plant to pathogens. Genetic engineering also makes it possible to increase the resistance of the plant to pathogens without changing the agronomic characteristics of the host.  I’m using different molecular technologies to study the efficacy of different strategies for increasing the resistance of apple to fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) and apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), by over-expressing (NPR1, VF) or silencing (receptor kinase of DspE) certain apple genes in different genotype of apple. I am also involved in a project to characterize the molecular and protein responses of resistant and susceptible apple cultivars and rootstocks to fire blight.
