Current Research Focus
I have five current research interests, all related to virology:
Diagnostics: improvements in the sensitivity and breadth of molecular (virus) detection using established and novel techniques such as: Arrays, qPCR, RCA, ELISA, etc.
Evolution: understanding the processes and mechanisms involved virus adaptation using computational analyses of field and database samples.
RNA structure: determining the structure and role of viral genomic RNA in the infection process.
Nanotechnology: exploiting the plasticity of virus encapsidation in the development of viral nanoparticles.
Virus Discovery: biological characterization of novel viruses.
I have over 20 years research experience in molecular biology and virology working on long-term research projects on a variety of different agronomically important crops and model plants in laboratories in England (IACR-Rothamsted), Spain (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), Chile (Pontificia Universidad Católica), Germany (Julius Kühn-Institut) and Italy (International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology). My main contributions to the field of virology have been in diagnostics, virus resistance, infection processes, evolution, biosafety and taxonomy. From 2004-2009 I co-supervised the complete installation and administration of the Biosafety Outstation in Ca’Tron di Roncade, Veneto, Italy – a research station aimed at studying the potential risks concerning genetically modified crops and plant pathogens.

Presently, I supervise and co-supervise the research of post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students.
Previous to my present position, I ran one week long research courses in plant molecular biology for master’s students (Heidelberg, Germany) and was continually involved in outreach activities with the general public, special interest groups, growers and schools on the subject of genetic engineering and biosafety (Veneto, Italy).
